Tinnitus Pro application

Tinnitus Pro is a smartphone app (available on iOS and Android) that provides a personalised, evidence-based tinnitus management programme. It combines sound therapy with psychological and mindfulness-based approaches to help reduce the impact of tinnitus over time.

The four main components of the App are as follows:

1. Personalised Sound Therapy

The app creates a Personalised Therapeutic Tone based on the individual’s tinnitus pitch. This tone underpins all of the sound therapy programmes.

The sound therapy includes four listening modes:

* Habituation

* Helps the brain become less aware of tinnitus.

* Uses soothing soundscapes while subtly emphasising the tinnitus frequency.

* Based on principles of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT).

* Recommended use: 1 hour or more daily.

* Adaptation

* Aims to reduce the perceived loudness of tinnitus over time.

* Uses notched-noise therapy, removing energy around the tinnitus frequency to encourage changes in brain activity (cortical plasticity).

* Recommended use: 1 hour or more daily.

* Relief

* Provides temporary symptom relief during tinnitus spikes or stressful situations.

* Uses below-tinnitus-level masking.

* Recommended use: 2–15 minutes as needed.

* Sleep

* Designed to make falling asleep easier by reducing the contrast between tinnitus and silence.

* Begins with habituation sounds before gradually fading.

* Recommended use: 5–8 hours overnight.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Intervention (CBI)

The app includes lessons based on cognitive behavioural techniques to:

* Reduce distress caused by tinnitus

* Change unhelpful thought patterns

* Improve coping strategies

* Build resilience

3. Meditation and Mindfulness

Guided exercises are included to:

* Reduce stress and anxiety

* Improve emotional resilience

* Increase acceptance of tinnitus

* Help users respond more calmly to tinnitus

The guide suggests starting with 5–10 minutes of meditation each day.

4. Educational Learning

The app contains short educational videos covering:

* Understanding tinnitus

* Sleep strategies

* Relaxation techniques

* Practical coping skills

Watching a few videos each day is recommended.

How to get started using the Tinnitus Pro App?

Please contact the clinic at info@beaconaudiology.com or call 01-2937930 to set up the purchase of the Tinnitus Pro app. This can be done over the phone or in person in the clinic. Once purchased you will receive a link to download the app and follow the steps below:

1. Download the app and log in using your phone number.

2. Match the therapeutic tone to your tinnitus.

3. Complete regular tinnitus check-ins to monitor progress.

4. Choose a daily programme:

* Habituation or Adaptation

* Sleep programme overnight

* Relief mode whenever symptoms flare

5. Use meditation and educational content regularly.

6. Stay consistent, as benefits build over time.

Key take home message:

The app emphasises that there is no single treatment that works for everyone. Users are encouraged to try different therapy modes and continue using the programme consistently for several months to determine which combination provides the greatest benefit.

Rather than curing tinnitus, Tinnitus Pro is designed to:

* Reduce awareness of tinnitus

* Lower emotional distress

* Improve sleep

* Increase coping ability

* Help the brain gradually adapt so tinnitus becomes less intrusive in everyday life

From an audiology perspective, the programme aligns with current multidisciplinary tinnitus management by combining sound therapy, cognitive behavioural techniques, mindfulness, and patient education—approaches that have the strongest evidence for improving tinnitus-related quality of life, even though they do not eliminate the tinnitus signal itself.

Please contact the clinic at info@beaconaudiology.com if you wish to purchase the app and get started. We will require you to come into the clinic for an appointment with the purpose of setting up the app and guiding you through it.

Avoid Silence

Tinnitus is exacerbated by silence.

Most tinnitus is first heard at night, or in a quiet room. Persistence of tinnitus depends not only on the meaning attached to it, but also to the contrast it creates with the auditory environment. For example, a small candle in the corner of a large, darkened room seems to be dazzlingly bright, until the room lights are switched on making it virtually invisible.

Everyone, especially tinnitus patients should avoid extreme silence, and retraining programs will always use sound enrichment. Make sure there is always a pleasant, non-intrusive background sound (like a large slow fan, or an open window, or a device generating nature sounds).

Choosing what sound is right for you may take some time. Nature sounds are always best, as they are already habituated, and usually produce feelings of relaxation, calm and well-being.
